The first year we got fine peaches off the tree. We had peach crisp, peach pie and peach cobbler. That winter was especially hard and many of the branches broke. Pruning would have helped. Instead I cut the branches back severely, down to just the trunk and main major limbs. None of what I left on the trunk was longer than 6 feet some of which died off due to the inside of the limb being exposed to water, where it broke during the heavy snow fall that winter. I did some reading and learnt that you should only trim about 1/3 of the tree per year. After many years a limbs yield of fruit diminishes. Space your limbs to allow sun light to all the branches. Stop any suckers on the trunk as you want the sap to go up the main trunk to the branches to stock fruit. When you do cut a limb, you need to seal it to keep out water and bugs. You can use the rubber undercoat from the auto parts store to seal the cut. Some times you can find this on sale in Wal-Mart for only per can. Just spray it on the open branch and let it foam up, creating a seal. I mention this because some expert arbor stores will sell you the same stock with a different label for can.

Now one year later, it has taken all summer to grow my trees back to a bushy bunch of branches. Our trees are alive and healthy and they even produced one peach which is a miracle (given that there was not much left after I cut it back). I also went to the hardware store and purchased tree spikes. These are slow publish fertilizer in a stick, about 1 inch round and 6 inches long. You put them in the ground in a circle like at the edge of the leaf shadow. The purpose is to keep the main trunk growing and healthy while it rebuilds the branches. New growth is what produces the fruit.

Prune regularly 1/3 of the tree. Use tree spikes to fertilize moderately all year. Seal branches after pruning.
